G’day guys, I hope you have all been well and getting in plenty of fishing on your days off. Mulloway fishing is set to get a whole lot better with this current big dump of rain along the east coast. Hopefully drawing in some impressive fish and setting some new boat records for 2020! Lets not forget the two records we broke in 2019 with joe’s 170cm monster Mulloway on a live bait and 30lb tackle caught in March 2019 and at the very end of the season George’s new Mulloway on a lure boat record and his new PB.
George Sechos broke a five year long record in November 2019 landing a superbly conditioned 130cm Mulloway on 8lb line. Battling the beast for an impressive 40 minutes both angler and fish were well worn out but we still managed a few nice pics and promptly got it back into the water for a healthy release.
Gear used….
Rod- Shimano Jewel 3-6kg
Reel- Shimano Stradic FK 2500
Line- 8lb Kairiki
Leader- 12lb Ocea flurocarbon
Lure- Squidgie bio tough 100mm fish in Blood worm
It was a great way to end what has been a great Mulloway season but it started with another fish of a life time for regular client Joe Messina landing a whopping 1.7m Mulloway on a live yakka and 30lb tackle. Again this fish was released in good health after a few pics.
Another record was broken in May 2019 with the most Mulloway caught in a day on a charter, when we put 25 Mulloway of varying sizes from 45cm to 100cm on the deck, all caught on lures and light tackle, not forgeting the 30 Bream to 42cm amongst them!
Some great Bream were caught on lures this season with one of the more memorable fish caught on a fishin tuition 2.5hr session by Ilija. His fantastic Bream was caught casting at submerged boulders on 3lb tackle. Ilija’s casting and line control was improving throughout the session and was well rewarded when the perfect cast was made and this 43cm bream ate his offering on the drop next to a submerged rock.
I took some time off over winter to give my trusty and reliable vessel ‘Me & Jew’ a well earned strip and refit. Along with stripping the remaining paint from the inside and on the transom, I had some welding done to strengthen the gunnel mounted rod holders and down rigger mounts, rewired the whole vessel, upgraded the Lowrance HDS Gen3 9″ sounder to the new Lowrance HDS Live 12″ filling the dash up on the console, adding a rear lean post and lift ring holder, re-upolstering the main seat and finally just before xmas 2019 a new 70hp Yamaha was bolted on the transom for that added bennefit of reliability and trouble free fishing charters. Overall the vessel has been performing well with the new mods and should get me a few more years of use before anymore major upgrades.
Summer has seen some great Kingfish action in Pittwater and Sydney harbour with plenty of double figure sessions to keep clients entertained. Down rigging live baits has been the standout but some sessions we just drifted near bait balls and suspended baits and had some great results. Early in the season the surface feeding fish were very fussy at times but small soft plastics and poppers acurately cast into the leading edge of the school worked well.
As we approach Autumn there will be a cross over of species with Kingfish Mulloway Bream Flathead and Estuary perch the main target species on offer with good sizes and numbers of each of these species.
